Process
Florida Solar Energy Center Process for LEED for Homes:
- Projects should familiarize themselves with required and optional measures contained in the LEED for Homes Rating System to ensure it is a good fit for the project.
- This LEED for Homes process should be initiated prior to construction. If construction has already begun, contact FSEC to determine if certification is still plausible.
- LEED for Homes is primarily for new residential construction with a maximum of 3 stories. If you project is 4-6 stories, contact FSEC to discuss. Projects over 6 stories are not eligible for LEED for Homes.
- LEED for Homes was not designed for renovation to existing homes. If your project is a “gut level” rehab, which is defined as exposing the underlying wall structure from either the outside or the inside so that insulation improvement can be assessed, the home may participate in the program.
- The builder must register each project with the USGBC. This can be done by visiting: http://www.usgbc.org/leed/homes. To register the project, a Provider must be selected. Please contact FSEC to discuss your project prior to registering.
- Once your project is registered FSEC will send a project agreement and invoice for LEED for Homes verification fees. An overview of fees can be found by clicking the fees tab at the top of this page. The project will need to select a field agent to move forward with the process. A list of field agents can be found by clicking on the agents tab at the top of this page, and FSEC can assist with selection.
- In preparation for the first meeting with the field agent, the project should fill out the LEED for Homes checklist to the best of their ability. During the meeting, the following will be determined:
- Technical and verification requirements for each required/optional credit.
- Optional credits the project will incorporate.
- Any additional technical assistance costs that result from selection of optional credits or from other project needs.
- A preliminary LEED for Homes score and certification level.
Note that some projects will be in need of technical assistance prior to the Preliminary Rating meeting such that the above objectives can be achieved.
- The Field Agent will schedule necessary site visits and other documentation activities with the project as construction progresses. At a minimum, field agent will visit the site just prior to installation of drywall, and again near the end of construction.
- When the home is complete and all inspections and documentation activities are complete, the Field Agent will review the verification activities and documentation with the Provider, who will request certification of the project from the USGBC. The project will pay the final certification fee to USGBC.
